Healthier lifestyles promoted

10:17am Thursday 11th March 2010

THE Moreton Area Centre will be a hive of activity over the next week when it hosts events on quitting smoking and improved services for the elderly.

The High Street centre is hosting a Healthy Lifestyle Morning on Monday to support both No Smoking Day and the forthcoming Sport Relief national charity drive.

The theme will be the promotion of health and wellbeing and Cotswold District Council leisure officers will be on hand with a range of free fitness tests, including checks on blood pressure and lung function.

Leaflets and brochures about fitness classes at the five CDC leisure centres will be available, and NHS Gloucestershire will be offering advice on stopping smoking.

David Durston, the council’s health and fitness manager, said: “This is the perfect chance for residents to gauge their own fitness levels and find out whether they are in shape or need to take action to get fit.

“Everything on offer in the session is being done for free and it will be a great mix of fun, fitness and information all under one roof.”

The event is being held from 9am to 1pm in the upstairs chamber at the Moreton Area Centre. For details, contact the MAC on 01608 650881.

Meanwhile, older people in the north Cotswolds are being encouraged to attend a free information event at the Moreton Area Centre next Friday.

The event organised by Gloucestershire Rural Community Council’s In Touch project, in partnership with Gloucestershire County Council and Age Concern, is being held from 10.30am to 2.30pm.

It is designed to give older people the chance to find out what changes adult social care is making over the next few years to give them more choice and control over how they get the support they need to stay healthy and live independently.
